Art & Archeology

Atzompa, Vives Verde & Arrazola

Atzompa was a suburb of Monte Alban, and the site was only restored beginning in 2012. It's a quiet visit to Atzompa in the early morning, and a walk back 1000 years but only 20 minutes from the city.

On our way down from the archeological site, we'll stop at the Vasquez family home, the matriarch and her daughters all throw clay and their work is very special.

We'll then head over into Xoxocotlán to the garden of architect Francisco Martinez Carrasco, who helped design the botanical gardens in Oaxaca, and his private garden is available to visit. He has art made from recycled materials and a beautiful, hidden oasis. We'll enjoy a catered lunch in the patio of his home across the road.

A little further down the road is Arrazola, which is the birthplace of the wooden figures known (incorrectly) as alebrijes. We'll visit the Jimenez family and learn about the process of making these works of art.
